8 Don’t-Miss Brisbane Events this August
August 1st, 2014
Planning on spending some time in the Sunshine State this August? There’s always plenty to do in Queensland’s capital, and a short holiday or business trip can be a much needed pick-me-up to get you through the working week, month or year. Brisbane boasts some pretty balmy weather, even in the middle of winter, so there’s no excuse to just hang out in your hotel room!
Here are ten sights and sounds to experience during your trip to Brisbane this August.
1. Sam Fullbrook: Delicate Beauty
One of Australia’s most celebrated 20th Century painters, Fullbrook is noted for his post-WWII work in particular. The “Delicate Beauty” exhibition will feature work from both public and private collections, and is the first showcase of Fullbrook’s work in nearly 20 years. Catch it at Stanley Place in Southbank until 11 August.
2. Queensland Ballet – Flourish
The name says it all. This unmissable performance from the Queensland Performing Arts Centre features four iconic works of dance: Serenade, Short Dialogues, Bolero and La Esmeralda. A combination of both contemporary and classical works, this quartet of quality dance will be performed for just a short week between 1 and 9 August.
3. Le Noir – The Dark Side of Cirque
Is Cirque Du Soleil a little too on the light side for your tastes? Then don’t miss Le Noir; a breaktaking performance inspired by the former, with a cast almost exclusively made up of former Cirque stars and other elite athletes and acrobats. Le Noir has already sold out shows around the world; the Lyric Theatre will no doubt follow suit.
4. EKKA 2014
With a very special place in the history and culture of Brisbane, the Royal Queensland Show will take place this year between 8 and 17 August. Known as the EKKA to locals and visitors alike, it’s the perfect place to bring the whole family with showbags, rides, animals and entertainment galore. The only problem will be fitting everything in.
5. Queensland Symphony Orchestra: Ghosts in the Orchestra
A contemporary collaboration between choir and orchestra, this orchestral offering will feature both the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and members of the Australian Voices. In a spin on tradition, the orchestra and choir will share the stage for this performance, only at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre on August 9.
6. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival
As winter wraps up, the next fashion season is all in vogue. The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane will showcase the spring and summer collections to be hitting stores in the coming months. This year’s festival has large shoes to fill, with some 80 designers featured in 2013 and an audience of over 7000 people. Get your tickets while you still can.
7. Parks Alive
Perfect for both parents and kids, Roma Street Parkland will host free events this August. Entertainment will include talks from celebrities and gardening experts, demonstrations, food stalls, as well as live music and demonstrations to keep the kids entertained. The perfect blend of fun and relaxation.
8. Isuzu Queensland Open
Golf fans take note. This year’s Isuzu Queensland Open will be held over four spectacular days between 28 and 31 August at Brookwater Golf and Country Club. Definitely worth taking a long weekend for!
