Enjoying Events for Free in Brisbane
July 14th, 2012 | Meriton Apartments
Sometimes it can be hard finding anything cool to do that doesn’t have a price tag attached, but that certainly isn’t the case in Brisbane, where awesome, free, cool events keep popping up year after year. If you are looking for something fantastic and free to check out in Brisbane, the following are some of the city’s best events.
Mellow Music on the Green
Whether you are in Brisbane on holidays or live there and are looking for a free way to unwind and relax at the end of the week, Brisbane’s recently developed River Quay Green area is the place to be on Friday evenings in May this year. Some of Brisbane’s best musicians will be putting on 45-minute sets for free between 6pm and 8pm, providing the perfect way to chill out and relax on a beautiful autumn evening.
On May 19 and 20, the skies over Pelican Park in Brisbane were filled with colour, as kite lovers and their kites descended for this fun annual event. There were over 100 stalls selling art, crafts and food, and for $3 you or your kid could have done a short workshop and made a kite of your own. If you had a kite, this event was totally free, and you could have grabbed your kite and headed to Kitefest this year, because the only thing better than flying a kite is flying one with a few hundred other people.
Part of the Pine Rivers Festival, the Hills Carnivale took place in George Willmore Park in late May and was one of the best free events of the year. One of the big highlights was the mardi gras style parade put on by the local schools, and along with food, art and craft stalls, live music, street performers and even a fireworks display, the Hills Carnivale was one fantastic free event. If you’re thinking of heading next year, remember that a lot of people come for this great event, so whether you are looking to stay in holiday apartments or group accommodation, be sure to book early.
The Racecourse Road Carnival
Held on June 3 in 2012, this colourful, free family event is just the way to mark the first weekend of the winter. Racecourse Road comes alive with stalls, live music and street performers, and there are even rides for the kids. If you are dreading next year’s winter already, this awesome free community festival will get you back into a positive frame of mind.
World Press Photo Exhibition
This powerful free event was held from June 2 to 24, and was an absolute must for anyone with an interest in photography. This year’s event was the 55th running of the exhibition, and as always there were some hard-hitting images, some of which could be quite disturbing.
Out of the Box Children’s Festival
Held from June 12-17 at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, this wonderful free children’s festival celebrated its 20th year in 2012. Some of the highlights of this year’s festival included ‘the Flying Orchestra’, ‘the Digital Play’, a cardboard city and the always-popular dinosaur puppets. While the events are all free, some have limited space and therefore require tickets, so if you’re looking at attending next year, make sure you get your kids spots secured as soon as you know you are going.
