The Nicholson Museums 50 Objects, 50 Amazing Stories
October 14th, 2013 | Meriton Apartments
From the 5th of June 2012 to the 31st of May 2014, the Nicholson Museum is featuring its intriguing exhibit 50 Objects 50 Stories, a collection of pieces that simply have the best stories, according to museum senior curator Michael Turner.
Of the 30,000 possible choices from which Turner could have pulled the exhibit pieces, he was able to narrow selections down based solely on the stories behind the objects. The fifty objects chosen vary in value and rarity. But all have interesting historical anecdotes attached to them.
The exhibit includes a prehistoric stone axe, a granite block of a column from the Temple of Bastet at Bubastis, a marble statue of Eros and pieces from all over the world including Egypt, Greece, Italy, France, Ireland and Pakistan.
One of the better stories was actually written by seven year-old museum enthusiast Bill Blake. The story, which focuses on a South Italian helmet from the 4th century BC is an original creation by Blake to assign an interesting tale to a piece that otherwise had no known story. Turner is hoping Blake’s story will follow the helmet through history.
