There is always something happening in Sydney and you can always find an event to suit your mood. From candle making classes to theatre and film presentations, you’ll never be bored on a visit to Sydney.
Here’s a look at what you can expect in the coming months:
The Magic Flute – Mozart: January – March
Julie Taymor has brought Mozart’s classic opera The Magic Flute, along with its colourful moving set, to the Opera House for various dates throughout January, February and March. With an impressive line up of Australian opera singers, as well as giant puppets, spectacular costumes and flying children, this is an opera not to be missed.
Chinese New Year Festival: January 24 – February 9
Outside of China, Sydney offers one of the largest Chinese New Year Festivals, starting with the festival launch at Belmore Park. The festival will include highlights such as traditional dragon and lion dancing, dragon boat races, a twilight parade and Chinese markets.
Australia Day celebrations: January 26
Celebrate Australia Day in the best way possible by taking a cruise around the harbour before taking in the Darling Harbour fireworks. Lunch and dinner cruises are available and a great way to see the city while celebrating a significant day.
For those wanting to celebrate with music, why not pack a picnic basket and head for the Sydney Domain, where you’ll find the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performing Gustav Holst’s suite The Planets for free.
George OpenAir Cinema: January 10 – February 15
For 33 nights from January 10 to February 15, the St George OpenAir Cinema will air its summer season of films from its incredible Mrs Macquaries Point location.
City of Sydney Lawn Library: January 9 -26
Set among the trees in Sydney’s Hyde Park you will find a storytime oasis full of readings, creative workshops and hundreds of books for you to read, borrow or keep. Take a coffee and a rug and relax.
Australian Tattoo and Body Art Expo: March 7 – 9
The sixth annual expo will return to the city for a three-day event that will feature tattoo contests, motorcycle stunts, live music and burlesque performances.
The Lion King: December 5 – May 11
The breathtaking production of Disney’s The Lion King will have you tapping your feet while you marvel at the colourful costumes and stunning effects. Follow Simba’s journey to becoming king and be transported to the Serengeti Plains.
Tyrannosaurs – Meet the Family: Nov 23 – July 27
In a world first, meet the Tyrannosaurs family through a multimedia experience like no other. With more than ten life size dinosaurs plus one of the world’s oldest dinosaurs on show, both kids and adults will be amazed.
Hurley Australian Open of Surfing: February 8 – 16
Watch some of the world’s best surfers take on the waves at Manly Beach and enjoy a nine-day festival that includes performances by world-class athletes, and art, fashion and skateboarding workshops.
