Herschel Street, Brisbane

Home of the First Meriton Serviced Apartments operation in Brisbane

This slender elegant building is located in the Centre North Precinct of Brisbane City in the North Quay zone of the City Parts Plan. From the approach to the city from the west along Coronation Drive the building presents as a gateway marking the extremity of the central city area from this direction. Viewed from Southbank the building presents as an anchor or corner post to the profile of the high-rise buildings which form the city skyline.

From the centre or eastern parts of the city the building presents as a curved understated building of elegant proportions. From the Hershel Street side of the building looking toward the city the building presents in the foreground as a faceted glass form with random lengths of crisp vertical white blades cascading from the top to the bottom of building. These elements bind the tower to the podium by extending horizontally as pergola elements (like connecting tendrils) which then extend vertically down the face of the podium to street level. The podium elevation to Herschel Street is strengthened by a dark portal frame clad in stone, with a glass wall recess back into the building to accentuate the profile of the portal. The cascading blades perch randomly like descending stalactites along the top of the portal. The blades then continue to rain down the face of the glass wall to the footpath breaking the continuum of the glass facade behind. Further variety to the appearance of the podium facade is provided by a thin floating layer of translucent pale yellow awning and a patchwork of solid facade elements and the two driveway openings forming negative reliefs.
